The History and Symbolism of the Miraculous Medal

The Miraculous Medal traces its origins back to 1830 in Paris, France, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré, a Novice of the Daughters of Charity, in the convent chapel on Rue du Bac. During these apparitions, Our Lady presented the design of the medal, promising special graces to all who wear it with confidence and devotion.

The front of the medal depicts the Immaculate Conception, crushing the serpent beneath her feet, symbolizing grace overcoming sin. The reverse side features a large "M" surmounted by the Cross, interlaced with the Twelve Stars from the Book of Revelation, alongside the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced with a sword.
